Description:
Robust perennial, 85-230 cm tall, growing from a corm-like rhizome; roots many, with elongated tubers at the tips. Leaves sub-distichous, 5-8, broadly linear, up to 80 cm long,hairless, sheathing at the base. Peduncle terete, upto 2 m tall, with sheathing bracts along the length. Inflorescence up to 70 cm long, unbranched or with 1-2 branches at the base, fairly laxly flowered. Flowers 2-5 at the lower nodes, 1-2 at upper nodes, on pedicels up to 7 mm long in fruit. Perianth white with tepals 3-veined on the keel. Stamens as long as the perianth; filaments dilated in the middle, shorter than anthers. Capsule obovoid, shallowly ridged, 9 mm long.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: stolzii: after Adolf Ferdinand Stolz (1871-1917), German missionary, merchant and plant collector in Angola and Malawi, particularly of orchids.
