Epiphytic, or rarely lithophytic, herbs, without pseudobulbs. Leaves distichous. Inflorescence axillary, usually a raceme, sometimes branched. Flowers white, green or yellow. Sepals and petals free, ± spreading. Lip entire, rarely obscurely 3-lobed, concave, spurred, the base enveloping the column. Pollinia 2. Derivation of name: Angraecum is the latinised version of the Malayan name, angrek, for epiphytic plants. Worldwide: 200 species, occurring in tropical Africa, the Mascarenes and Sri Lanka. Burundi: 4 taxa. |
