FZ.13. Cynorkis Thouars

Description of the genus

Terrestrial, rarely epiphytic, herbs. Stem, ovary and calyx often glandular-hairy. Leaves mostly radical with a few sheath-like on stem. Flowers in terminal raceme, white, pink or purple to mauve. Dorsal sepal often forming a hood with the petals; lateral free. Lip entire or 3-5-lobed, with a spur.

Worldwide: 125 species, mostly native to Madagascar and the Mascarenes, with c.20 in mainland Africa.
