Description:
Straggling, creeping or ascending perennial herb, branched from base; stems 10–65 cm long, quadrangular, hairless throughout, lower internodes short, lengthening above. Leaves opposite, sessile, ovate to ovate-oblong, 5–28 mm long, 3–5-veined, hairless but pellucid-punctate beneath; margin subentire, crenate or shallowly obscurely toothed. Flowers few in lax, spike-like raceme, in axil of one of opposite pair of bracts. Pedicels 1–2 mm long. Calyx 5-7.5 mm long, tube hairless, markedly winged along major veins; lobes broadly triangular, 1–1.5 mm long, shortly ciliate-pubescent. Corolla blue, violet or purple, 10.5–16 mm long, shortly glandular-pilose outside, upper lip broadly ovate, subentire, lower lip clearly trilobed; throat and palate with orange-brown hairs. Capsule ovoid, 5 mm long, with persistent style.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: goetzei: after Walter Goetze (1872-1899), German naturalist, explorer, photographer and collector of botanical and zoological specimens in Tanzania.
