Description:
Creeping or scrambling herb, usually perennial, with stems up to 3 mlong,often rooting at the lower nodes. Leaves ovate, elliptic or lanceolate, 1.5-14 cm long, one leaf in an opposite pair larger than the other, margin, crenate-serrate or almost entire; petiole 0.7-6 cm long. Inflorescences terminal and axillary, clusters 1-4-flowered,sometimes together forming verticils at the end of the stem. Bracts leaf-like, ovate to oblanceolate, up to 20 mm long; bracteoles broadly obovate to oblong-elliptic, 7.5-18.5 mm long, one in a pair larger than the other, variously hairy, sometimes only on the margins. Calyx divided almost to the base, 5-lobed with lobes linear-lanceolate, 2-8 mm long. Corolla 17-32 mm long, 2-lipped, white to mauve with dark purple markings. Capsule 10.5-15-5 mm long, finely velvety towards the apex.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: triflora: with 3 flowers, not an exact reference to the number of flowers together in a cluster.

Worldwide distribution: Widespread in tropical africa, Eswatini and South Africa but oddly absent from the mountains of Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Also in southern Arabia, India to China and Thailand.
