Description: |
Small evergreen tree. Leaves oblong or elliptic, thick and leathery, exuding a yellow sticky latex when broken. Lateral veins conspicuously etched on both surfaces. Flowers solitary or in small clusters, axillary, greenish-yellow, short-lived. Fruits fleshy, spherical, yellow when ripe, edible. Verdcourt in FTEA separates G. buchananii and G. huillensis as follows: 1.Leaf lamina ± long-acuminate; petiole 5-15 mm long; bark not corky ... buchananii 2.Leaf lamina rounded, obtuse, acute or apiculate at the apex; petiole 2-6 mm; bark corky ... huillensis The distinction is valid for Zimbabwe; whether it is valid in Zambia awaits an examination of herbarium material. |
