Description: |
Single-stemmed, erect, shrub, 1–3 m tall. Stem mostly much-branched above with branches more or less regular, opposite or 3-whorled, often ascending to more or less erect, often densely leafy. Leaves opposite of 3-whorled, subsessile, narrowly obovate, oblanceolate, oblong-elliptic, lanceolate to almost linear, 3–15 mm long, rarely up to 20 mm, mostly hairless; margins often rolled under; stipular sheath shortly hairy, with 3–8 setae 1–4 mm long. Flowers unisexual on different plants, subsessile, in many-flowered clusters at nodes; female inflorescences often quite contracted, dense, cylindrical; corolla usually 4-merous, greenish to creamy yellow, often dark purplish-red or -brown ringed outside. Male flowers larger than female. Fruit reddish-brown, shiny or greyish-brown; mericarps more or less obovate, oblong to elliptic, 1.2–2.4 mm long, mostly hairless, crowned by 2 triangular calyx lobes, one often larger than the other. |
