Dioecious evergreen tree to 22 m; sap copious, yellow, turning dark red on exposure to air. Young branchlets with reddish-brown stellate tomentum. Leaves 7-20 × 4-11 cm, dark green above, glaucous and densely glandular-punctate beneath, oblong to oblong-lanceolate or elliptic, cordate at the base; apex long-acuminate; glabrous or with scattered dark brown stellate hairs beneath; lateral nerves 15-20, prominent beneath. Petiole 7-14 mm, dark brown stellate-tomentose. Inflorescences usually borne on 2- or 3-year old branches below the leaves, 10-15 cm long, paniculate with densely rusty-tomentose branches. Flowers unisexual, scented. Male flowers: perianth 1 mm long, deeply 3-lobed. Female flowers: perianth lobes broadly ovate. Fruiting inflorescence pendulous. Fruits clustered, 3-4 × 2-3 cm, ellipsoid to oblong or pear-shaped, splitting vertically into 2 halves, yellowish-orange when ripe. Seed 1, dark brown, with a fleshy, laciniate, red or pink, aril. |
