Description:
Small tree with a cracked reddish bark. Leaves opposite but sometimes appearing 3-whorled, oblanceolate, elliptic or obovate, 9-30 cm long, leathery, hairless above, sometimes slightly pubescent beneath; domatia usually present; petiole 3-15 mm long, more or less velvety.; stipules 3-angular, long acuminate, 4-5 mm long. Flowers in terminal, 3-17-flowered inflorescences, pendulous, sweetly scented. Corolla white with red-purple spots at the throat, golden velvety outside; tube 4.7-7.2 cm long, shortly cylindric and bell-shaped above widening up to 4.7 cm at the mouth; ovate, up to 3.5 cm long, whitish hairy inside. Fruit globose to ellipsoid, 2-4.6 cm long, rust-coloured, flaking, calyx limb persistent at the apex.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: engleriana: named after Dr Prof Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler (1844-1930), German Director of the Royal Botanical Gardens in Berlin, who initiated extensive botanical exploration in Africa.
