Description:
Erect blue-green annual herb to 1 m. Stems and leaves slightly succulent, often purplish, especially below. Leaves sessile, lanceolate to oblong, up to 20 × 6 cm, sparsely hairy and becoming hairless; clasping the stem at the base; margin with scattered minute teeth. Capitula c. 12 mm across, orange or red; base 3-5 mm across. Invlucral bracts c. 8-9, 9 mm long, equal in 1 series. Rays absent.

Derivation of specific name: coccinea: scarlet, although the flowers can often be bright orange
