Description: |
Robust perennial herb, up to 3 m high; stems slightly woody at base, little branched, more or less densely velvety or hairy. Leaves variable, pinnatipartite to bipinnatisect or the uppermost and lowermost sometimes simple, 5–15 cm long and up to 10 cm wide, hairy or hispid-pubescent on both surfaces; margins serrate to lobed; petiole 10–40 mm long. Capitula terminal, solitary or in few-headed leafy cymes, erect; involucre 7–14 mm long; outer phyllaries 9–13, green, pubescent, inner phyllaries with scarious margins, hairy to velvety. Ray florets yellow or orange, 8–13, 20–40 mm long, 10–15 mm wide; disc florets yellow, 5–7 mm long. Achenes black or dark brown, 5.5–10 mm long, compressed, hairy; aristae absent in outer achenes, on inner 2, divergent, to 2.5 mm long, nude or with 1 or 2 antrorsely- or retrorsely-set barbs at apex or at base. |
