Description:
Aromatic small shrubby perennial herb with several stems up to 1.5m high from a woody base. Leaves opposite 3-whorled, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 1.7-10 cm long, rugose and somewhat scabrid above, roughly velvety beneath with dense yellow-grey-green glandular hairs beneath,venation prominent beneath; margin closely crenate-serrate; petiole 1-8 mm long or leaves subsessile. Inflorescences solitary or 2 per leaf (up to 6 per node); peduncle short, usually not reaching beyond the base of the subtending leaf; bracts conspicuous rounded ovate, obovate, or triangular-lanceolate, up to 2 cm long, appressed glandular pubescent and ciliate on the margin. usually 5-veined or ribbed, often purple-tinged. Corolla deep purple, crimson or magenta, sometimes with a white or yellow centre, scarcely exceeding the bracts above; tube slender, 3-5 mm long densely spreading pubescent. Fruit subglobose, blue to purple, 2-4 mm, more or less shiny.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: Ukambensis: from the land of the Wakamba people in Central Kenya where the type specimen was found.
