Small shrub up to 3 m. tall; whole plant covered with brown woolly indumentum; leaf lamina 5-12 x 2.5-7 cm., ovate or lanceolate-ovate, sometimes slightly 3-lobed, acute at apex, cordate or subcordate at base, margin irregularly serrate; petiole up to 6 cm. long, stipules c. 7 mm. long, linear-lanceolate, densely pubescent; inflorescences leafy, composed of small cymes crowded at the nodes; peduncles of cymes and pedicels very short, up to 2 mm. long, bracts 3-4 mm. long, linear; sepals 4.5-8.5 mm. long, linear, subapical horn 0.2-0.5 mm. long, densely stellate-pubescent; petals yellow, 4-7 mm. long, linear-oblanceolate, rounded at apex, villous at base; stamens 8-10, filaments 6-7 mm. long; ovary 4-locular, globose; fruit 1-1.5 cm. in diameter including aculei, aculei numerous, covered in simple hairs or almost glabrous and with the terminal seate single, straight or slightly curved.

Derivation of specific name: tomentosa: covered with densely matted woolly hairs.

Worldwide distribution: Throughout tropical Africa and southern tropical America but in Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe in the Flora Zambesiaca region.
