Description:
Perennial trailing or twining herb, up to 3 m long, from a very thick rootstock. Stem slender, hairless or sparsely pubescent. Leaflets 3, linear-lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, ovate, oblong or rhombic, 1.5–9 cm long, hairless or very sparsely hairy particularly along the margins; petiole 1–5 cm long; stipules ovate-lanceolate or triangular, 2–3 mm long, persistent. Peduncle 3.5–14 cm long, hairless; rhachis 1.5–12 cm long. Flowers pinkish-mauve, 11–17 mm long; pedicel 2–5 mm long; bracteoles persistent, c. 1.5 mm long, 3-veined. Calyx hairless; tube 2–3 mm long; lobes 2–3 mm long, the lower lobe almost twice as long as lateral lobes, the upper pair united into bifid lip. Standard symmetrical with two central appendages; keel almost symmetrical, with a beak c. 1.5 cm long incurved through almost a full circle. Pod linear, flattened, 8–14 cm long, hairless, raised sutures along the margin; beak straight.

Worldwide distribution: Nigeria, DRC, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Also in Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and India.
