Annual herb, usually much branched growing up to 90 cm tall; stem and branches ridged, often reddish, moderately to densely covered in long soft hairs; leaves broadly obovate to linear, 1.5-8.5 x 0.2-3.5 cm., thinly to moderately covered in long soft hairs, sessile, blunt to subacute at apex; inflorescence green with apices of bracts, bracteoles and tepals frequently pink to carmine, conical when young but becoming subglobose to cylindrical, 1.2-6.5 x 1.2-1.4 cm., very dense on a short to long peduncle up to 11 cm. long or rarely sessile through branch-condensation and then often with short lateral inflorescences at the base; bracts ovate-lanceolate, 3-5 mm. long, white-membranous, glabrous or sparingly hairy along the central dorsal surface, tapering to apex; bracteoles narrower, lanceolate, 2.75-5 mm. long, more densely hairy; flowers truncate at base, fused to bracteoles and attached to the inflorescence axis by a knob-like stalk; tepals lanceolate-subulate, greenish with stout midrib ending in a pale to reddish pointed tip 1-2 mm. long, outer 5.5-7 mm. long with upwardly directed white hairs, inner c. 1 mm. shorter and narrower; perianth and bracteoles falling in one unit in fruit; capsule oblong-ovoid, 2-2.25 mm. long; seed c. 2 mm. long, oblong-ellipsoid, shiny brown.
