Laxly caespitose perennial arising from a short rhizome clad in white cataphylls; culms up to 130 cm high and 1–3 mm in diameter at the base, erect or ascending, wiry and slender, without stilt roots. Leaf sheaths glabrous (rarely the inner, protected, ones pubescent); leaf laminas up to 30 cm × 2–5 mm, firm but not rigid, scabrid on the margins and scaberulous on the nerves. False panicle 15–40 cm long, narrow, scanty; spatheoles 2–4 cm long, narrowly lanceolate, glabrous or thinly hirsute, turning reddish-brown; peduncles 1–2.5 cm long, a little over half as long as the spatheole, pilose above with yellowish hairs; racemes 1–2 cm long, 4–7-awned per pair, laterally exserted, deflexed; raceme-bases subequal, the superior 1–1.5 mm long, flattened, stiffly barbate, with an inconspicuous scarious rim. Homogamous spikelets 5–6 mm long, a single pair at the base of the inferior raceme only, villous with white hairs. Sessile spikelets 4.5–5 mm long; callus c. 0.5 mm long, cuneate, narrowly obtuse at the apex; inferior glume oblong-lanceolate, usually dark purple beneath a covering of white hairs; awn 1.5–2.5 cm long, the column puberulous with pallid hairs. Pedicelled spikelets 4–7 mm long, villous with white hairs, terminating in a short awn-point 1–3 mm long; callus scarcely developed; pedicel-tooth obscure.
