Description:
A loosely tufted grass, up to 1 m tall, growing from a short rhizome. Culms erect or often arching. Leaves dark green to blue-green, linear, 8-30 cm long and up to 1.75 cm wide,tapering to a long soft point, scaberulous on both surfaces or above only and on the margins, Sheaths at the base tight, tubular; ligule 2-5 mm long. Panicle elliptic to broadly ovate in outline, up to 28 cm long, open and lax. Spikelets 15-30 mm long, loosely 5-12-flowered, linear-oblong in outline, somewhat laterally compressed, light green, sometimes purple-tinged. Glumes unequal, ovate-lanceolate; inferior glume 5-11 mm long, 1-veined; superior 7-14 mm long, 3-veined. Lemmas lanceolate-elliptic, i5-14 mm long, 3-7-veined, apex entire or with two small teeth; awn 4-8 mm long, straight.
