Description:
A stoloniferous perennial, loosely caespitose. Culms 25-140 cm. tall or even more, erect or geniculately ascending, slender, simple, 3-many-noded. Leaf-sheaths scabridulous towards the mouth. Leaf-laminae 5-17 x 0.25-0.6 cm., usually expanded, tapering to a fine point, glabrous, sometimes slightly rigid, scaberulous. Panicle 5-25 cm. long, up to 2.75 mm. wide, contracted, linear to oblong in outline, straight or slightly curved, sometimes lobed or interrupted. Spikelets 2-2.6 mm. long, widely gaping, pale-green or tinged with purple. Glumes 1 -nerved, subequal, as long as the spikelet, lanceolate, membranous, acute, scaberulous to scabrous. Lemma 1.4-1.6 mm. long, oblong-elliptic when expanded, 5-nerved, apex truncate, all nerves or at least the lateral pairs excurrent into short mucros, rarely with the central nerve excurrent into a short (0.5 mm.) awn; callus glabrous. Palea slightly shorter than the lemma, faintly 2-nerved, apex usually 2-dentate; rhachilla not produced beyond the floret. Anthers 0.8-1.4 mm. long.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: schimperianus: although several other persons named Schimper are known in botanical history most species and genera are likely named after Georg Heinrich Wilhelm Schimper (1804-1878) who collected mainly in Ethiopia.
