Description of the genus

Shrubs, all parts stellately hairy, sometimes simple hairs also present. Stipules subulate or setaceous. Leaves petiolate, alternate; lamina 3-7-lobed, palmately nerved, crenate-dentate. Inflorescences of leaf-opposed umbels; bracts similar to stipules. Flowers 4-merous. Sepals 4, deciduous. Petals 4, oblanceolate, white or purplish. Stamens numerous, with nodose filaments. Ovary 4-5-locular. Capsule dehiscent, ellipsoid, covered with rigid bristles.

Derivation of name: Named after Anders Sparrman (1748-1820)

Worldwide: 3 species in Africa and Madagascar
