Shrubs, often with climbing branches, or woody climbers. Tendrils usually present, leaf-opposed, never borne on the inflorescence. Leaves simple or 3(-5)-foliolate. Inflorescences in leaf-opposed, ± condensed cymes. Calyx ± entire. Petals 5-6. Disk entire with the ovary completely submerged in it. Style slender, readily visible. Seeds 1-2(-4). Worldwide: 12 species in tropical and South Africa Burundi: 3 taxa. The larvae of the following species of insect eat species of this genus:
