Description of the genus

Perennial herbs or suffrutices. Leaves alternate, usually sheathing the stem at the base. Inflorescences of racemes or panicles, sometimes the heads solitary or with a few subtending heads. Phyllaries in many rows, rounded or obtuse, sometimes purplish. Capitula homogamous, discoid; florets bisexual. Receptacular scales 0. Corolla tubular below, abruptly widening to a linear limb exserted beyond the pappus and involucre. Achenes densely hispid. Pappus of barbellate or ± plumose setae.

Worldwide: 26 species in tropical Africa
