Description of the genus

Glabrous annual. Leaves simple, ovate, toothed to ± lobed. Flowers solitary, axillary. Calyx deeply 5-lobed, each lobe with two sagittate wings at base, enlarging and enclosing the fruit. Corolla campanulate, shallowly lobed. Ovary 3-5-locular. Fruit a dry berry.

Derivation of name: Named after Nicander, poet of Colophon.

Worldwide: Native of Peru, now naturalised in warmer countries throughout the world
