Annual or perennial herbs, arborescent herbs or suffrutices. Stems quadrangular or rounded-quadrangular, usually branching, hairy. Leaves opposite, ternate or quadrate, sometimes forming a rosette at base of annual stems, often coloured. Inflorescence in a dense or lax corymb or panicle. Calyx small bilabiate. Flowers arranged in (2)6(9)-flowered vertical; Bracts often coloured broadly obovate or rhomboid, obscuring pedicels and calyces; corolla short, bilabiate, tube straight dilating towards the throat. Fruit consisting of nutlets, brown or black, apex rounded or flattened, usually producing a small amount of mucilage when wet. Worldwide: 35 species in tropical Africa Burundi: 4 taxa. |
