Description of the genus

Shrubs or small trees. Leaves alternate, glabrous. Flowers terminal, in umbels (in ours), 4-5-merous. Calyx-tube cylindric. Petals 0 Stamens twice as many as the calyx lobes. Ovary 2-locular. Fruit a drupe.
In P. africana Calyx tube strongly ribbed, especially towards the abrupt base; ovary glabrous; disk glabrous. In P.fischeri Calyx tube less strongly ribbed ± tapering to the base, ovary ± densely hairy at apex: disk sparsely or densely ciliate at apex.

Derivation of name: named after Lt-Col John Peddie, plant collector in the Eastern Cape in the 1830s

Worldwide: About 10 species in tropical and SE Africa, and one endemic in Madagascar. Two in the FZ region.
