Trees or shrubs, spiny (in ours). Leaves petiolate. Flowers large and showy, solitary and terminal or lateral on short shoots, bisexual. Sepals 3-4. Petals present, 5-10 or more, exceeding the sepals. Stamens many. Ovary 1-locular, with 2-10 multiovulate parietal placentas. Fruit indehiscent, smooth or slightly ridged with a hard shell, many-seeded. Derivation of name: from the Arabic name onkob for this genus. Worldwide: Widespread in tropical Africa, extending to South Africa and Arabia. Burundi: 1 taxon. |
