Herbs, subshrubs or shrubs. Stipules present, but may be caducous; stipels 0. Leaves pinnately 4-many-foliolate; leaflets alternate, asymmetric at base. Inflorescences distichous, mainly dense, ± scorpioid, often in the form of a strobilus; the flowers reflexed. Bracts entire, scarious, brownish and persistent; bracteoles also persistent. Calyx scarious, 5-lobed. Corolla white, yellow, blue or pink. Stamens monadelphous. Pod with 1-9 articles, folded like a concertina, enclosed in the calyx, the articles rounded, smooth. Derivation of name: After Karl Georg Theodor Kotschy (1813-1866), Austrian botanical explorer and plant collector in the Orient. Worldwide: 30 species in tropical Africa and Madagascar Burundi: 9 taxa. |
