Description of the genus

Unarmed trees. Leaves 2-pinnate; rhachis with a gland between each pair of opposite pinnae. Flowers in sessile spikes. Calyx 5-toothed. Petals 5. Stamens 10. Pods dehiscing along one margin, the valves remaining attached along the other. Seeds with a membranous wing.

Derivation of name: after Portuguese naturalist, Francisco Xavier O'Kelly of Aguilar Azeredo Newton (1864-1909) of the Natural History Museum in Porto

Worldwide: 14 species in tropical Africa
