Description of the genus

Lianes. Leaves simple, peltate. Male inflorescences of false compound umbels; male flowers: sepals 6-8; petals (0-)3-4, free; stamens 2-6, united in a stalked disk. Female inflorescences similar to male. Female flowers: sepals 3-6, free; petals 2-4, free; carpel 1. Drupes ribbed or with minute prickles. Bracts minute, not enlarged in fruit.

Derivation of name: named after Christian Stephan (1757-1814), director of Forestry Institute in Petersburg and professor of Botany and Chemistry in Moscow

Worldwide: 35 species in the tropical Old World
