Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs without stinging hairs. Stipules intrapetiolar, fused to the apex. Leaves opposite, petiolate, entire or serrate. Cystoliths linear. Inflorescences axillary or apparently terminal, unisexual or bisexual, bracteate at last when young. Male flowers (2-)3-4-merous. Female flowers usually 3-merous. Achene flattened.

Worldwide: 200 species in tropical and warm areas, excluding Australasia
