Description of the genus

Herbs with long stinging hairs. Stipules intrapetiolar, fused almost to apex. Leaves alternate, petiolate, coarsely serrate. Cystoliths dot-like. Inflorescences unisexual, consisting of dense elongate cymes in the axils of the upper leaves; male inflorescences thinner and more spike-like than female. Male flowers pedicellate, 4-5-merous. Female flowers sessile with 3 ± fused tepals.

Worldwide: 2 species in the warm and tropical Old World
