Trees. Leaves distichous, pinnately veined; stipules fully amplexicaul, connate. Inflorescences in the leaf axils, initially enveloped by 2 coriaceous bud-scales. Staminate flowers peripheral, without a perianth. Pistillate flower 1, central, partly adnate to the receptacle; perianth 4-lobed. Fruit forming a drupaceous whole with the enlarged, fleshy, dark purple to red receptacles crowned with the remnants of the stamens and the marginal part of the receptacle. Seed large, without endosperm; cotyledons equal, thick and fused. Worldwide: Two species in tropical Africa and Madagascar. Burundi: 1 taxon. |
