Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves alternate, simple, pinnate-veined, without stipules. Flowers in terminal or axillary scorpioid cymes, actinomorphic, bracteate; sepals 5, basally connate; petals 5, basally connate. Fruit four 1-seeded nutlets.

Worldwide: 168 species in North America, Tropical America, Africa, Madagascar, Tropical Asia and Australia.
