Groeninckx, I., Ochoterena, H., Smets, E. & Dessein, S. (2010) Molecular phylogenetic and morphological study of Kohautia (Spermacoceae, Rubiaceae), with the recognition of the new genus Cordylostigma Taxon 59(5) 1457-1471

Description of the genus

Species in this genus were formerly placed in subgenus Pachystigma in Kohautia. Molecular data proved the inclusion in Kohautia caused the genus to be biphyletic with similar floral traits having evolved independently. The original name Pachystigma could not be used for the newly installed genus since that name has already been used in the Rubiaceae tribe Vanguerieae.
Species mainly differ in stipules consisting 2-8 fringing subulate fimbriae and stigmas being cylindric or ovoid, not two-lobed.

Worldwide: 9 species in Africa and Madagascar.

Burundi: 1 taxon.
