Perennial herbs, terrestrial or epiphytic, glabrous with abundant white latex; roots thickened, fleshy; stems herbaceous, terete and hollow; most leaf axils producing small, rudimentary, accessory shoots. Leaves opposite or ternate, petiolate. Inflorescence flowers solitary in dischasial forks or terminal. Flowers large pendent (-5)6(-7)merous throughout; calyx lobes entire or sometimes dentate, erect, spreading, or reflexed; corolla funnelform or campanulate, lobes short. Fruit baccate with persistent calyx. Seeds numerous. Worldwide: 3 species in tropical Africa (2) and Canary Islands (1). Burundi: 1 taxon. |
