Scandent shrub with opposite branches. Leaves opposite, entire; indument of jointed barbellate hairs. Inflorescence a broad panicle of “spikes”, bracteate, bracts persistent; partial inflorescences sessile on the axis of the spike, consisting of one fertile bibracteolate flower and two modified sterile flowers, also bibracteolate. Ovary with a single pendulous ovule, glabrous, obovoid-pyriform. Fruit a thin-walled indehiscent utricle enclosed by and falling with the persistent perianth and bracteoles; endosperm copious. Worldwide: Species 1. Burundi: 1 taxon. |
