Description of the genus

Perennials. Inflorescence of 2-many racemes, usually arranged subdigitately but sometimes along a central axis. Spikelets adaxial, dorsally flattened, borne singly along the racemes. Lower glume 0. Upper glume as long as spikelet; lower lemma similar, without a palea. Upper lemma crustaceous. In Zimbabwe, the genus consists of two introduced lawn grasses.

Worldwide: c. 110 species in tropical and subtropical America; 1 species (A. flexuosus) endemic to Africa
