Description of the genus

Annuals or perennials. Inflorescence of racemes along a central axis or a panicle condensed about the primary branches (E. meyeriana). Spikelets single, paired or clustered, elliptic, thinly biconvex, supported on a globular bead-like callus; lower glume vestigial (but present in E. meyeriana), adnate to the swollen basal internode; upper glume as long as spikelet, often with an awn; upper lemma coriaceous, granulate, usually mucronate.

Worldwide: c. 30 species in tropical and warm regions
