Description of the genus

Aromatic annual or perennial herbs; stems winged, with resin ducts. Leaves alternate, dentate, hairy, decurrent. Capitula disciform, terminal, forming a large lax inflorescence; flowers mauve, pink or yellow. Phyllaries narrow, the outer often recurved. Receptacle flat, without scales. Outer florets female, filiform, 3-lobed; inner florets bisexual, 5-lobed. Anthers without tails. Style 2-fid; with obtuse sweeping hairs reaching below the fork. Achenes cylindric, hairy, without resin ducts. Pappus of free barbellate bristles in 1 row; each bristle with appressed teeth.

Derivation of name: after Dr Franz Josef Lagger, Swiss physician and botanist, 1802-1870

Worldwide: 17 species in tropical Africa, Arabian Peninsula and Asia
