Trees or shrubs. Leaves opposite, petiolate; stipules free, usually deciduous. Inflorescence terminal, paniculate. Flowers small; calyx lobes 5; corolla salver-shaped, pubescent outside, lobes 5, not overlapping in bud. Fruit a capsule, opening from the base upward. Seeds numerous, winged. Derivation of name: after the Countess of Chinchon, wife of the viceroy of Peru Worldwide: About 40 species native to cool upland regions from Costa Rica to Andean South America. Burundi: 2 taxa. |
