Annual or perennial herbs usually with scattered golden glands. Leaves alternate, simple, entire, lobed or pinnatisect. Capitula in terminal corymbs or solitary. Phyllaries in 3-5 series. Receptacular scales present, ± clasping the disk florets and (in ours) rolled inwards lengthways. Female marginal florets tubular and glandular below, bearing a yellow ligule. Inner florets bisexual, 5-lobed, with ellipsoid or subcylindric achenes. Pappus variable, sometimes 0. Worldwide: c. 30 species in tropical and South Africa; one species in China Burundi: 3 taxa. |
