Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs or shrubs. Leaves alternate, entire, toothed or pinnatifid. Capitula heterogamous. Phyllaries in 2-many series, narrowly linear, lanceolate or oblong, the outer smaller. Outer female florets white, sordid, greenish or yellow in 2-many series, fertile, filiform, either bearing rays or minutely 3-4(-5)-lobed or truncate. Disk florets whitish-yellow or greenish, bisexual but often sterile, tube with triangular lobes. Pappus accrescent, with numerous barbellate setae.

Worldwide: c.60 species, occurring in temperate and warm areas.
