Description of the genus

Annual herb. Leaves opposite. Flowers small, dimorphic, borne in small sessile terminal heads. Calyx lobes 3-4, small, sometimes 1 enlarged. Corolla lobes 3-4, oblong. Ovary 2-locular; ovule solitary in each loculus, pendulous. Fruit ovoid, indehiscent, breaking off to leave a small cup, which is the persistent woody pedicel.

Worldwide: 1 species in tropical Africa
