Description of the genus

Glabrous, ± fleshy herbs. Stipules with a short sheath and several narrow fimbriae. Leaves opposite, sessile with a central vein and obscure lateral veins. Inflorescences lax and open cymes, terminal and axillary, with 1-4 flowers arising at each of several widely-spaced nodes. Flowers sometimes heterostylous. Calyx of 5 triangular lobes. Corolla tube narrowly funnel-shaped; lobes 5. Ovary 2-locular, with numerous ovules in each loculus. Stigma 2-lobed. Fruit a capsule.

Worldwide: 2 species occurring in warm and tropical regions of America, Africa, Arabia and the Seychelles
