Prostrate herb, rooting at the nodes, softly villous. Inflorescence a terminal spike, with closely overlapping bracts. Calyx zygomorphic; lobes 4, free almost to base; adaxial and abaxial lobes large, the adaxial often 2-fid; lateral lobes small. Corolla 2-lipped; lobes 5. Fertile stamens 2; anthers 2-thecous. Ovary with 8-10 ovules per loculus. Capsule oblong, slightly beaked. Seeds not borne on retinacula, with hygroscopic glochidiate hairs all over surface. Worldwide: 1 species in the Old World tropics Burundi: 2 taxa. |
