Perennial herbs or subshrubs. Leaves petiolate, crenate. Inflorescences of flowers in dense terminal or lateral spike-like panicles. Bracts ovate, sessile, cuspidate, sparsely pubescent with ciliate margin covering the the axis between the verticils. Calyx 10-nerved; teeth 5, subequal. Corolla: tube funnel-shaped to cylindric; limb 2-lipped; upper lip curved; lower lip reflexed, 3-lobed. Stamens 4, fertile, didynamous, all directed to upper side of tube or upper lip of corolla. Nutlets obovoid, reticulate. Worldwide: c. 10 species in the Old World tropics Burundi: 3 taxa. |
