Annual or perennial herbs. Lower leaves ± opposite; upper subopposite or usually alternate. Inflorescence cymose, bracteate or not. Calyx, corolla and stamens 5(-6)-merous. Sepals lanceolate to ovate, strongly accrescent in fruit. Corolla campanulate to funnel-shaped, with ovate-acuminate to triangular lobes. Stamens and anthers converging to form a cone, with long shaggy hairs on the outer surfaces of the anther connectives. Ovary 4-lobed with a gynobasic style. Fruit either of 4 nutlets or a single sessile nutlet. Worldwide: 45 species in the tropical and warm Old World Burundi: 2 taxa. |
