Usually climbing or trailing herbs with ± succulent stems and leaves. Stipules present. Leaves alternate, peltate. Flowers solitary on long axillary peduncles, strongly zygomorphic, showy, usually (in ours) red, orange or yellow. Sepals 5, one produced into a long slender nectar-spur. Petals 5, clawed, often cut or fringed, the 2 upper ones unlike the others. Stamens 8. Ovary 3-locular, each cell with 1 ovule. Fruit of three 1-seeded carpels. Worldwide: 3 genera and 89 species from Central and South America. Burundi: 1 genus and 1 taxon. |
