Description of the family

Woody climbers, subshrubs, shrubs or small trees with medifixed hairs. Stipules present or 0. Leaves alternate (Acridocarpus) or opposite or ternate, simple, entire. Inflorescences terminal and axillary. Bracts and bracteoles present. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic or zygomorphic. Sepals 5. Petals 5, often unguiculate. Stamens 10. Ovary superior, (2-)3(-5)-locular. Fruit (in ours) winged.

Worldwide: 67 genera and 1,100 species, tropical and warm zones, especially South America.

Burundi: 3 genera and 3 taxa.
