Quarter degree square: 1124A4 Country: Zambia Habitat: Protected Forest Area, swamp and riverine forest Altitude range: 1200-1500 m Annual rainfall: 1151-1250 mm Location (short): Northwestern Province Location (detailed): Zambezi Source National Forest (No. 80) constitutes the site. It lies along the Congo border about SOkm north of Mwinilunga town. |
The focus of this site is the strip of gallery mushitu along the small valley that constitutes the source of the Zambezi. The forest is surrounded by rich miombo and such woodland covers most of the reserve's area. Being a National Monument, this is a relatively high profile site and therefore perhaps under less threat of habitat destruction than many. However, the surrounding woodland is slowly being cleared for small-scale farming and the site may be in danger of becoming an 'island'. Trees within the area are sometimes felled for honey and subsistence hunting and trapping would appear to be increasing.
